Music by Johann Sebastian Bach and his sons Wilhelm Friedemann and Johann Christian
Johann Sebastian Bach has worked on many of his own and other works in order to learn to adapt to other styles of composition or even to adapt them to his performance conditions. Out of this spirit Flautando Köln has now set up some works of the Bach family for recorder ensemble. The result of this demanding editing process is a varied CD full of surprises and the realization that sometimes more is possible than you think before.
[...] You can tell from the playing of Flautando Köln that the four musicians have known each other for over 20 years. They listen to each other and coordinate closely. It starts with intonation, which is always right here, and goes down to the smallest details of articulation. This is perhaps the greatest strength of the quartet: to articulate together and not to lose any intonation – a high art on the recorder. It is precisely this quality of the quartet that makes the interpretation of the organ works so convincing. Even though the music is distributed over four voices and every line is polished down to the last detail, it sounds like a piece of music. The four interpreters act as one single instrument. King Henry VIII was one of the most dazzling rulers of his time. His accession to the throne marks its 500th anniversary this year. As a pronounced artistic Monarch, he promoted especially the music at his court and maintained lively exchange with musicians from the European mainland. On the CD "Ye sacred Muses" Flautando Köln and Franz Vitzthum present music from the fascinating time of Henry VIII and Elisabeth I. Guests: Franz Vitzthum, countertenor; Katrin Krauss, Recorder; Andrea Cordula Baur, lute

"La Spiritata" means "The Humorous". On this CD Flautando Köln interprets music from five centuries, without any programmatic limitations or references. Guest: Torsten Müller, percussion
"The very beginning of this CD leaves you breathless: Tre Fontane - played in a virtuoso and rousing way that makes you wonder how it's done! It continues with Landini, Buxtehude, Vivaldi, Uccelini, Caldini ... But it is not only the breathtaking tempos and the unbelievable precision that captivate us - for example, with the Irish folk tunes on the Tin Whistle, but also the quiet passages, the unfolding of dynamics and sound are almost more fascinating - a colorful virtuoso CD that does not tire for a moment! Music from Spain's golden age
"Musica Hispanica", music from Spain's "golden age", introduces Flautando Köln in a consort version with recorders, voice and percussion instruments. In addition to the folkloric villancicos, the liturgical hymns of Pedro Escobar and works of the great organist Antonio de Cabezon encloses this CD program a wide span of music at the court of Charles V and Philip II, and the "Catholic kings" Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile. Guest: Torsten Müller, Percussion
"There's a footstep that you want to dance in, when the ensemble performs with breathtaking power and excellent playing technique and Torsten Müller produces syncopated rhythms with all the percussion. If ears had teeth, they would want to bite smoothly into this audiophile pomegranate. " (18.09.2005 www.klassik.com)

Musik zur Weihnachtszeit
The sounding chorales and songs on this CD are, according to the ecclesiastical-liturgical traditions, distributed to the individual Advent Sundays, to the Feast of Christ itself and to Epiphany on the sixth of January. In addition, Flautando Köln has put together pieces that musically reflect the different Advent and Christmas moods. Each of these stations becomes an independent "chapter", a kind of musical "door in the advent calendar". Guests: Franz Vitzthum, countertenor; Michael Dücker, lute / chitarrone; Stefan Horz, harpsichord / organ; Torsten Müller, Percussion
"With Christmas recorder music, some listeners associate traumatic experiences in a private environment, when nephews or grandchildren take these instruments on the occasion of an Advent coffee. To treat fears of this kind you should give them the exciting CD "Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern", in which the stunning recorder quartet Flautando Köln is accompanied by lutes, chitarrone, organ, harpsichord and percussion. VI Concerts à 4 flutes et basse continue
Pieces for four alto recorders and basso continuo, like the six present concerti, are extremely rare in the 18th century. Flautando Köln decided to record the works as a complete recording. The cleverly selected basso continuo, consisting of harpsichord / organ, bassoon, violoncello, violone and theorbo / lute in varying instrumentation, supports the four musicians in their lively interpretation. Guests: Stefan Horz, harpsichord / organ; Rainer Johannsen, bassoon; Nicholas Selo, cello; Miriam Shalinsky, Violone; Michael Dücker, Theorbo / Lute

Diminutions of the 16th century
"Diminuire" in the literal meaning of the word means shrinking down - paradoxically, because the present CD illustrates how a simple melody or a simple composition is becoming more and more exuberantly enlarged by an increasing amount of editing, an increase in figures and passages. The concern of the "Ars Diminuendi" attempts to underline and enhance the meaningfulness of a composition through ornamental embellishment.
"... Flautando Köln presents itself here with an exemplary musicality and tonal homogeneity." "A must for lovers of Renaissance music!" (29.11.2000 www.klassik.com)
